4K9W: APPEAL FOR HELP ---> "Being an invalid, after
the loss of his mother,
Vlad needs to arrange a continued care by his own to
keep having a more or
less normal life and to enjoy our great hobby on
air", Axel DL6KVA (Vlad's
QSL manager) wrote back in late 2008.
"With all this help from over 700 people and more
than EUR 30,000 spent for
this", DL6KVA says new, "we got here into 2014".
The vital 24/7 care is
assured until the end of June, after that "only
about 25% of the monthly
needed EUR 490,00 are assured". While appreciating
one time donations,
DL6KVA says that "what really would help is to find
about 15 people or so
who are able and would like to support Vlad with
about EUR 20,00 each on a
monthly basis". Full information about this ongoing
project can be found at
http://4k9w.blogspot.de/.
Axel's e-mail address (also used for PayPal
donations) is dl6kva[@]darc.de.

BEST COMMUNICATION AWARD ---> The "Best
Communication Award" by DX Coffee
takes into account the Public Relations side of a

information (daily reports, pictures, videos, forums,

line logs, operating advice, etc) provided to the
amateur radio community
through the DXpedition website and other channels.
The first award will be
presented during the DX Coffee Party
on 17-18 May. See

for further information. [TNX IZ8IYX]
DXCC NEWS ---> VK9MT (Mellish Reef, 2014 operation)
has been approved for
DXCC credit. [TNX NC1L]
FT4TA ---> The pilot stations for the FT4TA
DXpedition to Tromelin Island
(30 October-10 November) are: Col MM0NDX (Chief
Pilot), Harumi JR4OZR
(Asia/Japan), Bjorn ON9CFG (Europe/Africa), Al
ZL2AL (Oceania), Don N1DG
(North America East Coast/South America) and Rich
KY6R (North America West
Coast). The Mississippi River will be considered as
the boundary between NA
East and West Coasts. The pilots will not have
access to the logs;
inquiries about that must go to the QSL manager. Detailed
information on
the pilot stations can be found at
www.tromelin2014.com/pilotes
J8 ---> Ark, J8/UA4CC and Arunas, J8/LY2IJ made
20,000 QSOs (almost 1000 on
160 metres) during their recent operation from Bequia
Island (NA-025).
Logsearch and OQRS are available for both callsigns
on Club Log; the logs
have bee uploaded to LoTW. [TNX UA4CC]
QSL ARRL CENTENNIAL STATIONS ---> QSL cards for
contacts made with W100AW,
W1AW/x and W1HQ during 2014 will be sent
automatically to stations outside
the USA via the ARRL QSL Bureau as normal.
Arrangements for US stations to
have those QSLs delivered via the bureau (a one-time
only use of the QSL
Bureau for this purpose) can be found at
http://www.arrl.org/AW-BureauQSLs.
VK9MT ---> VK9MT Mellish Reef was activated on 30
March at 04:34 UTC with
ZL4PW first in the log and went QRT on 4 April at
13:53 UTC with JL1MTY
closing the log. "Our decision to leave the island
didn't come easily", the
team reports. The weather had grown progressively
worse each day, and "just
as the last QSO was made, it became clear we could
not remain on the island
another day. It was 01:00 (local) when the rain
began. The wind was blowing
at about 35-40 knots; we had water infiltrating the
operating tents and the
antennas were taking a severe beating". The
operators decided to QRT and
spent the next several hours packing equipment using
head and hand torches;
antennas and tents were taken down at dawn. "Once
the storm was officially
declared Cyclone Ita there was no question we made
the correct decision".
The team's goal was 80,000 QSOs in ten days; "in
five days we made 40,000
QSOs (61% CW, 30.5% SSB and 8.6% RTTY) which put
us on track for the
original target". Read the Final Press Release (issued
on 17 April) on
