CLUB LOG OQRS AND BUREAU CARDS ---> Club Log is conducting a survey about
bureau cards requested through its Online QSL Request System. At present,
two important rules apply to all users who wish to use CL OQRS: (1) Bureau
cards must be offered, and (2) No-one may charge for a bureau card in CL
OQRS. Club Log is now considering allowing users to choose to charge for
bureau cards, or choose not to offer bureau cards. Please complete the
survey at https://cdxc.wufoo.eu/forms/bureau-cards-via-oqrs/ and let them
know what you would prefer.
H44IOTA (OC-168) ---> This note was published on qrz.com on 16 July: "We
regret to inform all those stations that made contact with us on OC-168,
that a validation for this IOTA may not be possible due to computer
hardware failure and human error. We are seeking your understanding while
we do the best we can to retrive what is possible. In the meanwhile, please
wait with sending cards".
QSL Z81X ---> Some 400 OQRS envelopes were mailed on 16 July and the rest
will be completed within the next few days. Direct QSLing has also started
and several hundred envelopes are mailed out daily. Turnaround times for
both OQRS and direct are just a day or two. OQRS bureau cards will be
answered only after this initial phase. Traditional direct cards should be
sent to OH0XX: Olli Rissanen, Salmelankuja 14, FI-90940 Jaali, Finland. It
is also reported that plans for the upcoming South Sudan CQWW and low-band
operations remain on track and the operator roster will be finalized this
month. [TNX OH2BH]
QSL VIA G3SWH ---> With immediate effect, Phil G3SWH is the new QSL manager
for G0ORH, M3I and MM3I (which will be QRV from the Isle of Arran, EU-123,
during the IOTA Contest). There are already pages with log searches on
Phil's website (www.g3swh.org.uk). OQRS is preferred, but traditional mail
or RSGB bureau will also work. [TNX G3SWH]
YASME SUPPORTS EQUIPMENT ACQUISITION FOR NEW ETHIOPIAN AMATEURS --->
Ethiopia came back on the air May 30, 2011 with the re-opening of the
Ethiopian Amateur Radio Society station ET3AA. To support the
re-establishment of amateur radio in Ethiopia, the Yasme Foundation
(www.yasme.org) made a grant to pay for the fees associated with the
license examination for 25 club members. Many were successful but under
Ethiopian regulations could not receive a license without proof of
ownership of an amateur radio station.
To further support amateur radio in Ethiopia, the Board of Directors is
pleased to announce that it has made an additional grant to be used to
purchase amateur radio transceivers for three club members so that they can
satisfy the requirements of the Ethiopian licensing process. The Board
acknowledges with appreciation the substantial efforts of Ken Claerbout,
K4ZW, in facilitating the acquisition of the equipment and mentoring the
EARS members, as shown here with club member Adula at the microphone during
the 2013 IARU HF Championship contest. [TNX W6SZN]

AntennaJet AAS300 Splitter 9kHz - 300MHz
ctive 3 Way antanna Splitter 9 kHz - >300 MHz
1 Antenna to 3 Receivers
• Large dynamic range
• Wide Frequency range (VLF - VHF)
• High intermodulation suppression
• High isolation between outputs
• High reverse isolation
• Inputs ESD-protected
• USB-Power supply
• MADE IN GERMANY!
Bonito’s brand new active antenna signal splitter "AntennaJet
AAS300" is splitting the signal from one antenna to
3 different receivers simultaneous. The AntennaJet
has a wideband (>300MHz) and ultra low noise
amplifier and can share one antenna up to 3
different receivers which can be tuned to fully
different Frequencies, without switching the antenna
cable or even pressing a button.
Due to the extraordinary high decoupling of the
outputs (70dB), interference between the connected
receivers is avoided. At the same time, the emission
of interference to the antenna is effectively
surpressed.
Up to three receivers can be connected.
Non-connected outputs can remain open and don't need
to be terminated. With its ESD-protection circuit
the antenna input is protected against short or
pulsed voltage surges or short circuits*.
* The ESD Protection does not replace a
Lightning protection!

How do
I get started in shortwave radio listening?
Many
people have or want radios with the ability to pick
up shortwave broadcasts, but don't know how to
reliably find the stations they seek. Unlike your
local FM or AM radio stations, shortwave broadcasts
are usually directed to a specific geographic
location, for a specific audience, and at a specific,
fixed time. Frequencies and broadcast times can vary
from year to year, sometimes even from season to
season.
This guide has been put together to help you
understand your shortwave radio and take your first
steps into SWLing. The goal is to quickly get you on
the air. By the time you read through this online
primer, you will understand Universal Time, know the
basic terminology of SWLing, be able to find a
broadcast, and most importantly, know the best way
to hear it.
Where do I start?
If you don't have a shortwave radio, you should
begin by finding a radio that suits your needs and
your budget on our
radio reviews
page.
If you already have a radio, start by taking a look
at
World Time, or UTC.

CQ WW DX CONTEST ---> The rules have been completely
rewritten for 2013 and

- read carefully!
K6VVA/KL7 ---> Rick announced he was making an
attempt (the third one!) at
operating from Barter Island (NA-050) on 8-10 July
[425DXN 1157]. However,
"due to increased unexpected solar disturbances,
Auroral Oval, potential
NA-050 fog and now the likelihood of departure
delays and missed
connections due to the re-routing of many plane
flights down to the San
Jose Airport resulting from the unfortunate plane
crash at nearby SFO
airport, this trip is being postponed again. Plans
are to re-schedule a
fourth attempt at NA-050 in the next 45 days, but I
will only make a
posting just before boarding the first plane". [TNX

http://www.wrtc2014.org/competition/2013-station-test/.
In order to make sure all of the competitor stations
are equal, the
WRTC2014 organizers will compare the signals of the
test stations by using
the Reverse Beacon Network. All of the 25 stations
will be on CW on certain
bands and times with their beams in a specific
direction: the schedule is

9A - Croatia is set to become the 28th member state of the European
Union on 1 July. To celebrate the accession, the Radio Club Grada
Zaboka has been active as 9A28EU for about three months and will
continue until the end of the year. Also, Croatian amateurs can
apply for "28" to be added to their ordinary prefixes, and use
these special prefixed callsigns (9A280AAA-9A289ZZZ) between 1
July and 31 December: for instance, 9A2AA will become 9A282AA.
[TNX 9A2AA]
CE0X - Mike, WU2D has received his reciprocal licenses for Chilean
mainland (CE1/WU2D) and San Felix (CE0X/WU2D). He expects to go to
the island on 8 July and to be working there for five days. If he
gets permission from the Navy, he will be QRV in his spare time
most likely on 15, 17, 20 and 40 metres SSB and some CW. [TNX The
Daily DX]
CP - Antonio, EA5RM will be working on a non-governmental organization's
project in Bolivia on 3-19 July. He will be busy installing solar-
powered HF equipment for medical and emergency use at communities
on the Maniqui River and in the Amazon jungle. The project is being
developed by Radioaficionados Sin Fronteras (www.rsf-rwf.org) and
Solidaridad Medica Espana (www.solidaridadmedicacanaria.com). He
plans to be QRV as CP1XRM in his limited spare time with a 100-watt
solar-powered station and a vertical antenna. [TNX EA5RM]

H44IOTA ---> "Some issues have arisen about the current H44IOTA operations
that need to be addressed before decisions can be taken about acceptance
for IOTA. As this may take a little time to resolve, it may make sense to
hold off sending your QSLs for the time being". [TNX www.rsgbiota.org]
IOTA NEWS ---> The following operations in the period May-June 2013 have
provided acceptable validation and are therefore approved for IOTA credit:
HQ3W (NA-160), YB8P (OC-208), YB8RW/P (OC-236), H44AJ (OC-285) and H44S
(OC-285). OC-285 (Stewart Islands/Sikaiana Atoll) is now confirmed as a
valid IOTA group. [TNX G3KMA]
K9W ---> The Wake Atoll Commemorative team's operation is progressing
nicely. Most of the equipment has been received and is being pre-tested
prior to shipment to the staging areas in California and Hawaii. The two
week "on air" dates are anticipated to start the last week of September or
first week of October. However, this is entirely dependent on the military
flight schedule into and out of Wake Atoll and this has yet to be
determined. Visit www.wake2013.org for updates and information on how to
contribute to this expensive project. [TNX W8GEX]
YB0D ---> The website for the current DXpedition to Damar Besar Island
(OC-177) [425DXN 1155] is up and running at www.damarbesardxpedition.com
with detailed information and logsearch. Activity is expected to end at 3
UTC on 1 July. QSL via YB0JZS (direct only and postmarked not later than 31
December 2013) and LoTW (after six months). [TNX YF1AR]

ISS
Ham Radio Slow Scan TV active
The
Slow Scan TV (SSTV)
experiment on the International Space Station (ISS)
was active on July 2-3, on 145.800 MHz FM
The MAI-75 experiment worked very well producing
some stunning images.
All you need to do to receive the SSTV pictures from
the space station is to connected the audio output
of a scanner or amateur
rig via a
simple interface
to the soundcard on a Windows PC or an Apple iOS
device, and tune in to 145.800 MHz FM. You can even
receive pictures by holding an iPhone next to the
radio’s loudspeaker.
On Windows PC’s the free application MMSSTV can be
used to decode the signal, on Apple iOS devices you
can use the SSTV app. The
ISS Fan Club
website will show you when the space station is in
range.
