Short
Wave Heaven
Short Wave radio has been around for a long time.
It is a wonderfully reassuring feeling when far from
home to listen to a familiar voice on a Short Wave
radio.
Sadly, Short Wave reception is increasingly
difficult for people touring France, Germany and the
rest of Europe. BBC World Service signals are now
aimed only at Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
But - if the skies are merciful - you can still
hear the BBC bouncing off the ionosphere from
somewhere distant. And China Radio International
gives you a powerful signal, proudly telling
listeners "we will never give up on Short Wave."
The Russians, Romanians and the Vatican are the
next most enthusiastic on international radio
broadcasting. So don't ditch the Short Wave radio,
polish it up and get tuning! Radio Spain ended
weekday analogue broadcasts to Europe in November
2012, but continues every day in digital short wave
and carries sport on analogue at weekends.
It can be difficult to know what to look for. But
these charts make listening quick and easy.

The BBC World Service cut its English
Short Wave service by 60 per cent on
31st March 2013. The Cyprus Short Wave
relay station, which had been in use for
50 years, has now been closed. But the
remaining frequencies would appear to be
safe for another decade, as that is the
length of the BBC contract with the firm,
Babcock, which distributes its
programmes. BBC Arabic is no longer
available on Short Wave, except in
Sudan. BBC Arabic radio is generally
now only available if Arab governments
choose to let their people hear the BBC
on FM or online. Here are the
remaining BBC World Service Short Wave
frequencies from 31st March until 26

Prime
Time Shortwave
Prime
Time Shortwave is a listing of English shortwave
broadcast. What makes Prime Time Shortwave
different from other listings available on the
internet is that the schedules are being constantly
updated from various print and internet sources as
well as from monitoring by myself and other
shortwave listeners and DXers who frequent this
website. My aim is to make the schedules as
accurate and as up-to-date as possible. You will
also find links to some of the best radio related
websites and to the international broadcasters and
time conversion charts (some provided by Craig Braun).
I hope that you enjoy your visit to Prime Time
Shortwave and if you like what you find here pass
the word onto others who would find it useful. Good
listening,

C2013
ARRL 10 GHz and Up Contest Just Ahead!
The weekends of August 16-17 and September 20-21
will give adventurous radio amateurs the perfect
chance to explore the
microwave
portion of the radio spectrum with the 2013
ARRL 10 GHz and Up Contest.
The contest period on both weekends runs from 6 AM
local time on Saturday until midnight local time on
Sunday. Participants earn points based on the
distance of each QSO, and operating from several
locations — mountain-topping is popular — during
the event is not only allowed, it’s encouraged! Most
participants use SSB, although CW sometimes is a
better bet. In contrast to the typical HF contest
paradigm, most stations on the microwave bands run
only several hundred milliwatts, making up the
difference with gain dish antennas. Operators might
experience the thrill of completing a contact by
bouncing a signal off a mountain or building.
Tropospheric openings have also been known to occur
and boost propagation. Past participants have worked
up to 900 miles on 10 GHz! Interested? A
list
of VHF/UHF/SHF clubs is available on the ARRL
website. Send paper logs to ARRL 10 GHz and Up
Contest, 225 Main St, Newington, CT 06111.

CROATIA 28TH EU STAR AWARD ---> Issued by the Croatian Amateur Radio
Association (HRS), this award celebrates the accession of Croatia to the
European Union as the 28th member State. The rules can be downloaded at
http://www.hamradio.hr/download/CROATIA_28_EU_STAR_ENG.pdf [TNX 9A3SM]
H44IOTA ---> Reference the notice posted on the IOTA website on 25 June
[425DXN 1156], "we have noted the subsequent posting on the H44IOTA qrz.com
website to the effect that a validation of OC-168 'may not be possible due
to computer hardware failure and human error'. This is indeed the case as
we understand that with the non-availability of the logs for the land-based
part of this operation, QSOs cannot of course be confirmed for IOTA. Should
the missing logs become available, we will reconsider the position. In the
meantime we can confirm that we have accepted documentation showing
land-based operations from OC-149, OC-047 and OC-158 and credits will be
given for valid cards submitted. As a reminder, operations by yachtsmen
with on-board amateur radio stations present IOTA Management with
particular challenges with regard to rule compliance and they are routinely
asked to provide validation in accordance with the detailed requirements
outlined in Section F of the IOTA Directory Rules. In the case of the
recent H44IND operation and forthcoming H40IOTA ones it is suggested that
until acceptable validation is reported as having been received, the
sending of QSLs be delayed". [TNX rsgbiota.org]
ILLW ---> The 16th annual International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend,
conducted under the sponsorship of the Ayr Amateur Radio Group, will take
place from 00.01 UTC on 17 August until 23.59 UTC on the 18th. Complete
information on this popular event, including a list of participating
stations, can be found at http://illw.net/
P5 PROJECT ---> "We have added two new video slide shows from our recent
visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The first video shows
the children of the DPRK. The second video slide show shows many aspects of
our travels throughout the DPRK. You can find the videos by going to
www.intrepid-dx.com and select videos from the main menu". [TNX N6PSE]
