v [27/06/2013]  Catch the BBC’s annual broadcast to the British Antarctic Survey Team

Every year, the BBC broadcasts a special program to the 41 scientists and support staff in the British Antarctic Survey Team.

The BBC will play music requests and send special messages to the team of 41. It’s guaranteed to be quirky, nostalgic and certainly DX worth catching.

The British Antarctic Survey celebrates today (their longest, darkest winter day) with the same enthusiasm as Christmas. The BBC noted:

The base commanders rise early to cook breakfast for their staff, presents are exchanged, there are sports and even, weather permitting, a mad streak in the snow! Feasting continues before they gather round a shortwave set to listen to the traditional broadcast packed with greetings from their family and friends back home together with music requests and messages from the British Antarctic Survey and a few celebrities. Finally the Antarctic horror movie The Thing is screened. For those who know the plot, perhaps it is just as well there are no longer sledge dogs in Antarctica…

The great part? You too can catch the broadcast if you’re in the right part of the world to hear it.  I’ll attempt to record either the Ascension Island or Woofferton broadcast myself, if conditions make it possible.

The program will air today, June 21, 2013 at 21:30 UTC on the following frequencies:

  • 7,350 kHz; Ascension; 207°
  • 9,890 kHz; Woofferton; 182°
  • 5,965 kHz; Dhabayya; 203°

v [20/06/2013]  AOR introduces the AR6000: the 40 kHz to 6 GHz receiver

AOR has announced their latest (very) wide band receiver, the AR6000 last month at the 2013 Dayton Hamvention.

As with most AOR equipment, the AR6000 comes at a premium price–$6,500 US–but this receiver is quite unique in that it covers most of the radio spectrum 40 kHz to 6 GHz. I imagine AOR sells most of these to commercial and government entities; indeed it’s only available for export or government purchase here within the US.

Details below:

(Source: AOR USA)

The AR6000 delivers continuous tuning from 40 kilohertz to 6 gigahertz in a wide variety of modes for professional monitoring performance that’s nothing short of amazing in terms of accuracy, sensitivity and speed. Standard modes include AM, FM, WFM, FM Stereo, USB, LSB and CW. An optional module can add the capability to receive APCO25 digital communications plus an optional I/Q output can be added to capture up to one megahertz of bandwidth onto a storage device for later listening or signal analysis.

Designed for the monitoring or technical service professional, there are no interruptions in the AR6000’s tuning range. With exceptional tuning accuracy and sensitivity throughout its tuning range, the AR6000 begins at the floor of the radio spectrum and continues up through microwave frequencies so it can be used for land-based or satellite communications. It works as a measuring receiver for those seeking a reliable frequency and signal strength standard. To support its broad spectrum, the AR6000 has two antenna ports, with the added capability of an optional remote antenna selector from the front panel of the receiver.

With its popular analog signal strength meter and large easy-to-read digital spectrum display, the AR6000 is destined to become the new choice of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, the military, emergency managers, diplomatic service, lab technicians, news-gathering operations and security professionals

[15/06/2013]  ERT now broadcasting on several medium wave frequencies

It’s been several days now since the Greek government tried to shut down Greek National TV and Radio broadcaster, ERT. In fact, ERT was only off the air for a few hours; they immediately set up a live Internet stream and restored shortwave service to the Voice of Greece. They’re still going strong and, evidently, expanding.

SWLing Post reader, Christos, lives in Greece and has been keeping us up-to-date with field reports. He writes:

This day [Friday] the employees of ERT took over the frequencies of medium waves 666 KHz, 729 KHz, 981 KHz, 1008 KHz (Corfu) and 1404 KHz (Komotini), that the previous days remained silent.

Short waves (9429 KHZ) and 1260 kHz from Rodos Island continue active.

[There] are now two radio channels in operation.

Thanks again, Christos!

[15/06/2013] International Museums on the Air

This year again sees the Humber Fortress DX Amateur Radio Club participating in the International Museums on the Air event.

Operating from both the club house station and the new mobile shack station within the grounds of Fort Paull museum.

This has been one of our popular events in past years with over 10,000 stations contacted worldwide!

Listen for GB0FP on 160, 80, 40, 20m and local vhf or check out the DX clusters.

Fort Paull is a great place to visit as it takes you back to the Napoleonic times when this establishment was first in use in the 15th century through world wars 1 and 2 and up to the late 1960s when it was decommissioned by the MOD.

A family venue with lots to do to entertain the children whilst mum and dad relax and un-wind in the well kept grounds or visit us at our radio shack.

Fort Paull is also the home of the last remaining Blackburn Beverly XB259 transport aircraft in the world, a unique aircraft open to the public with lots of displays inside and out.

Russian section of EPC has established awards for the participants of EPC 7th Anniversary ETPA Contest - hunters for ETPA-expeditions - three souvenirs with PSK-festival logo in each of the seven age subgroups. In all subgroups we award a prize to the winners as well as to those who took the 7th place and we also give away additional prizes. If in any subgroup be less than 7 participants, the winner will be awarded. Souvenirs with PSK-festival logo will also be awarded to the youngest and oldest members of the contest. During the allocation of places occupied by participants in the case of equal number of QSOs in the contest, the advantage will get the much younger one. In the case of collective radio stations the best subgroup will be determined by age of the supervisor.

Souvenirs with PSK-festival logo will be awarded to three travellers-activators from Russia and three travellers-activators from other countries of Europe, whose expedition will be recognized as the best in June.

Participants of EPC 7th Anniversary ETPA Contest should send a report: copy to the EPC-MC and store spreadsheet with your application form for the award ETHA in *xls format, then highlight all contacts made in June 2013 or delete contacts made in other periods of time. Reports are excepted after July 1, 2013 up to July 10, 2013 at epc(at)epc-ru.ru

In the subject line you should indicate your call sign and a sub-group (or age). You must also inform in the letter your full name and postal address, date of birth. For the Club radiostations - full name and date of birth of each operator, callsign and EPC club numbers and indicate the total number of QSO with activators areas.

Information about the work of expeditions is published on the website of the ETPA-Center http://etpa.epc-mc.com. The final results of EPC 7th Anniversary ETPA Contest will be posted on all club sites. 73 and see you on the air in June PSK-Festival!

   [03/06/2013] EPC 7th Anniversary 2013

June 2013 is the seven years anniversary of the European PSK Club (EPC). Throughout June, EPC members will celebrate the occasion by being on air using a wide range of special call signs, each appropriate to their own particular Country but also sharing in the joint theme of the EPC event. The Stations will be easily recognizable and prominent on the bands having the suffix «EPC»!

Stations will be on air as much as possible during the month and will be using various PSK modes of transmission. Of course different bands will also be targeted and whilst we are in the thick of the «Sporadic E Season», it will be a great opportunity for us to work each other on the higher bands as well. The intention of the event from members is not only to highlight the EPC programme but also to encourage other operators onto the air and maybe even to aid them into becoming members of the Biggest Digital Ham Radio Club in the World!

The «EPC Celebration 2013» will also have its own series of Awards. Not only will the stations have the special call signs and QSL cards, they will also have new EPC numbers allocated which again make them eligible for the current award series, as well as the existing EPC numbers of the operators of the stations too.

It would appear that so far we have in excess of a few DXCC countries who have announced their intentions to be on air with the special EPC call signs and it would be so good if we could have more! The list of the announced EPC Club & Special Event Stations which will be operating in honour of the 7th Anniversary of the European PSK Club from 1st to 30th June, 2013 will be available shortly. Please contact Heinz, DK5UR or Yuri, RK3DSW as soon as possible if your EPC club or special event station intends to take part in the event, so that we can add your station to the list on timely basis.
